Oral Hygiene & Home Care

The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth at least twice daily and flossing once each day. Consistent oral hygiene is the best way to reduce plaque buildup and protect your smile. These habits also make professional dental visits more effective.

Most dentists recommend replacing a toothbrush every three to four months. If the bristles appear frayed or worn sooner, they should be replaced right away. Using a soft-bristled or electric toothbrush is also encouraged to protect teeth and gums from unnecessary wear.

Gum Health & Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, is a progressive condition caused by harmful bacteria. These bacteria release toxins that irritate the gums and damage the bone that supports the teeth. Without treatment, the disease can worsen and eventually lead to tooth loss.

Because gum disease can develop gradually, patients should be aware of common warning signs. Symptoms include swollen or bleeding gums, tenderness, persistent bad breath, gum recession, sensitive teeth, shifting or loose teeth, or abscesses. Early treatment is always the best approach.

Treatment depends on the severity of the infection. After examining your gums, Dr. Thomas may recommend procedures such as scaling and root planing, a gingivectomy, locally applied antibiotics, or ongoing periodontal maintenance. Each option is designed to stop the spread of bacteria and restore gum health.

Restorative & Cosmetic Treatments

Silver fillings, called amalgam, are made of a blend of metals that expand and contract inside the tooth. This movement can eventually allow bacteria to seep in. White fillings, known as composites, are made from durable plastic or glass polymers and are designed to closely match the natural color of teeth.
